Hello!

Over October 7th, 8th, and 9th, 2005, I will walk 60 miles in the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk* in Tampa, Florida. In order to participate, I'm committed to raising $2100. I hope you'll commit to supporting me with a donation.

Because of all the people who have donated their time and money, there have been great strides in breast cancer research, detection, and treatment. But there's still no cure. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for American women, and the leading cause of cancer death in women between the ages of 40 and 59. Breast cancer has challenged 2 million survivors in the United States. More than 200,000 more people will be diagnosed this year, and 40,000 will die from the disease.

In addition to providing immediate research funds, our commitment to participate by walking and donating money has other important effects. These large events continue to raise awareness for breast cancer, reminding women to get mammograms and conduct self-exams, increasing the chances of early detection. Increased awareness means more survivors. Our continued commitment to this cause encourages the government and other philanthropic foundations to keep supplying research funds. Finally, research into breast cancer can benefit other types of cancer research.

Please do this for me:

* This walk supports the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund. The Komen Foundation has been fighting breast cancer for more than 20 years, providing research funds and increasing awareness through outreach programs. The National Philanthropic Trust is one of the largest charities in the United States and manages the walk events. Its portion of the donation proceeds establish an endowment fund for other breast cancer initiatives. Links to both of these foundations are available on my webpage.
