Project Notes » Ferret Tam

Overview

A friend of mine wanted to enter an animal look-alike contest needed to copy a tam for her ferret. I played around with a few ideas and settled on crochet with double strands to accomplish the look that the original pattern had. And I adapted the idea of entrelac from knitting to build the pinwheel sections.

Pattern

Thread: DMC Pearl 5 Cotton
MC: Dark brown
CC1: Yellow
CC2: Brick

Stitch key:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet

You’ll make 8 triangles, starting each across the diagonal of the previous one. To help keep track of your rows, odd rows work toward middle of circle, even rows work toward outside. You can do this without the color changes. If you do, one strand of Pearl 3 cotton will probably give you the same look without the fuss.

If there’s interest, I’ll work up a chart for the triangles.
Setup row: Using 2 strands of MC and an appropriate sized crochet hook, ch13.

First Triangle:

Row 1: Starting in 2nd loop from hook, sc 12, ch1, turn.
Row 2: Drop 1 strand MC, pick up 1 strand CC1. Starting in 2nd stitch in, sc 11, ch1, turn.
Row 3: sc 10, ch1, turn.
Row 4: Drop 1 strand CC1, pick up 1 strand MC. Starting in 2nd stitch in, sc 9, ch1, turn.
Row 5: sc 8, ch1, turn.
Row 6: Drop 1 strand MC, pick up 1 strand CC2. Carry 2nd strand of MC along work, crocheting the new stitches over it. Starting in 2nd stitch in, sc 7, ch1, turn.
Row 7: Drop 1 strand CC2, pick up 1 strand MC. Carry strand of CC2 along work, crocheting the new stitches over it. sc 6, ch1, turn.
Row 8: Drop 1 strand MC, pick up 1 strand CC1. Starting in 2nd stitch in, sc 5, ch1, turn.
Row 9: sc 4, ch1, turn.
Row 10: Drop 1 strand CC1, pick up 1 strand MC. Starting in 2nd stitch in, sc 3, ch1, turn.

* End of First triangle*

Remaining triangles:

Row 1: sc 12 stitches across 3 from previous row and remaining 9 evenly spaced along the diagonal over the remaining rows toward the center point of the triangle. Be sure to crochet over any floats from the previous triangle to secure and hide them.
Rows 2-10 work as for first triangle
Repeat 6 more times for a total of 8 triangles. Work Row 1 across last triangle.
Using MC, sew last row to first first row.

Underside:

Using MC, sc around edge of pinwheel circle. Work a couple rows even, then begin decreasing each row. When the opening is about 1.5 inches in diameter, work a couple rows even. Finish off and weave in ends. Sew a pom-pom to the top or make a tassel.
