Project Notes » Holiday Ornament 2004

This Santa sweater is the latest in my annual ornament series. Each year, I
make a set of identical ornaments for myself, my mother, my mother-in-law, and my sister-in-law. The technique varies each year, depending on where my whims take me. Past years have included cross-stitch, beading, and crochet. This year was my first knitted ornament.

The tiny sweater pattern is part of a larger set for an entire Santa wardrobe. I got the pattern as a kit which included the yarn for the whole thing. I later found the pattern itself online. Each piece doesn’t take a lot of yarn, so it’s probably better to just order it on its own if you want to use up stash.

The jacket itself is raglan construction, all pieces knitted separately. They
are small, so they knit up quick, but the pattern was designed with a lot of
seaming required. By the end, I’d encorporated the button bands into the main front pieces so they didn’t require seaming. It’s not like rows were perpendicular to the main body, so I didn’t see a reason not to. If I were to do it again, I think I’d also work the pieces separately up to the raglan shaping and then knit the yoke all together.
